The WCFC Supporters Trust are saddened to hear of the resignation of Carl Heeley as Worcester City manager
Many of us involved on the Board of the Supporters Trust have great memories of Heeley the fearless central defender for Worcester City, always prepared to give 100% for his beloved blue and whites. Carl forged his mark as a club legend as a player, and it is rare for someone to come back and carry on that sterling work as a manager, but Carl did just that.
The magnitude of the challenge facing Carl when he took over from Richard Dryden, both on and off the pitch was massive, and has got bigger over the years. During his watch, Carl has seen the club lose St Georges Lane, be embroiled in the Nunnery Way failed project, be exiled to Aggborough and latterly Bromsgrove, and has seen the playing budget affected due to the financial predicaments at the club. Finding players and convincing them that they can further their career at WCFC has been a major challenge. Supporters need to understand that, the lure of playing for Worcester City FC is not as it was in the past. City are no longer a major force in non-league football, the effort needed by the management team to bring in players now is immense.
During Carl’s tenure, it is to his credit that the club maintained stability on the pitch, in spite of the instability off it. To remain in the Conference regional divisions constantly is testament to Carl and his management team being able to find players prepared to punch above their weight, even if only for short terms, in order to deliver the points needed for league survival. Not only that, but Carl also managed to deliver a team which brought incredible FA Cup successes to the team, and put Worcester City FC on the national news and sports maps.
As part of our discussions with the football club, the Supporters Trust have worked closely with Carl, and at all times, his professionalism, his integrity and his diplomacy has been exemplary. We may not have always been in agreement, but we have always worked with complete respect and trust.
Carl has been more than just a team manager, he has always been an ambassador for Worcester City Football Club, and the Supporters Trust are grateful for everything he done for the football club. We wish Carl and Vicky all the very best.
